National Pride of Place – Public Meeting

0

Help celebrate all that is good and unique about our town.

Kildare Town has been chosen to represent the County in the National Pride of Place competition for 2013.

There will be an information/public meeting on the 8 May at 7.30 pm in Kildare Heritage Centre (Market House), Market Square to explore how we as a community might showcase our town. All are welcome.

The competition focuses on how the community comes together to shape, change and enjoy what their local area has to offer. It can help galvanise our efforts to build an even stronger community. While it is a public meeting we would appreciate if each organisation could send even one representative.

Sometimes we cannot see the wood for the trees and we fail to appreciate how far we have come or how much is on offer. A recent comment by some UK visitors to the town (April 2013) testifies to just that, “Our first visit to Kildare was twenty years ago. [It] was in a bad state, closed and dreary. The Improvement to the town is incredible, excellent Square, easy parking, fresh and inviting. Kildare has vastly improved.”

None of the above would have been possible without the community coming together. Think of all the positive work happening through our public representatives, local sports clubs, festival committees, historic society, residents committees, tidy towns, volunteer and other agencies who are working together to move the town forward. Let us tell it to the world; we are proud of our town – 7.30 pm Wed. 8 May in Kildare Heritage Centre (Market House), Market Square.

Cill Dara Golf Club

0

Quality golf, affordable pricing and genuine hospitality is what Cill Dara Golf Club is all about. Be guaranteed this, in one golfing experience. A golfer’s visit to Kildare is not complete until playing Cill Dara. Located only 2 minutes drive from Kildare Town and 30 minutes from Newlands Cross, make a golfing trip to Cill Dara the top of your golfing agenda in 2012.

Cill Dara Golf Club is situated on the edge of the Curragh plains, perhaps the oldest and most extensive tract of semi-natural grassland in Europe. An area of international significance with a wealth of history and archaeological features and also the home of the thoroughbred racehorse. The Curragh plain was declared a national monument in 1996.

Thus, the golf course is uniquely located, with greens of superb texture and great character matched only by the delicate fabric of the fairways. A “LUSH SWARD IN SUMMER” A “WINDY TUNDRA IN WINTER”

The golf club was founded in 1921 and became affiliated to the GUI in the following year. In 1922 the club purchased an army hut for several hundred pounds as their new pavilion. By 1933 further renovations to the clubhouse had taken place and by the time the club celebrated its silver jubilee, Cill Dara had become very popular with leading amateur and professional golfers.

JB Carr, an honorary member, played many times and won the unique Golden Ball Competition. In 1986 a modern clubhouse was constructed. The project was completed on schedule, funded entirely by club members.
